Hebrews 1: He’s Speaking

All I really want in life is for the people in my life to be dependent on the Word of God. I want this for my students, my own children, my entire family, my friends, and myself. My oldest son asked me on the drive home from school today, “Mom, you know how some people don’t talk when they’re mad. Well, since God once spoke through prophets but doesn’t speak now, is it because he’s mad at us?” I said, “He does speak now, Buddy. Scripture says he did speak through prophets, but now he speaks through his Son (Hebrews 1:1-2). How do you know he speaks through Christ now?” “The Bible?” “Yes, and that’s why it’s so important to be reading it so you can hear his voice and what he has to say to you.” “But, how will I know what he is speaking to me?” “Well, sometimes you’ll be reading in his Word and not be sure what he’s trying to tell you, but you just keep reading and then one day you’ll say – Oh, that’s how you want me to handle that relationship, or oh, that’s where you want me to go to college, or oh, that’s who you want me to marry.”

The cry of my heart for my boys is what King David prayed in the assembly before his son, Solomon, was anointed king. “Grant to [my sons] a whole heart that [they] may keep your commandments, your testimonies, and your statutes, performing all.” (1 Chronicles 29:19) My heart was full the other Sunday when I snapped the picture to this entry of my youngest son. During our worship service, he wanted to look up his Bible memory verse from school in my Bible. He located the verse himself, and I prayed – Lord, may this always be the desire in his heart – to turn to your Word.

Are you depending on God’s Word? Are there people in your life you want to be dependent on God’s Word? Pray together with me a prayer David left us – Grant us, Lord, a whole heart to keep your Word and do what it says. Father, open our ears and hearts to you!
